SANTA CRUZ · THE MAIN DEPOSIT

Boxed in Santa Cruz. Waiting for Arica.

After the ovens, the charcoal left Taperas — near San José de Chiquitos — in a box trailer. One hundred fifty kilometers later it sat here, palletized in the main deposit in Santa Cruz, until a container was ready for the port of Arica, Chile.

THE HAUL

From the Chiquitania to the Pacific.

Taperas is in the same country that grows the tree. Santa Cruz is where the boxes wait. Arica is the ocean. Nothing in this photograph is loose powder. The kiln already did the work; the deposit only holds the cartons.

01 · TAPERAS

150 km by box trailer

The charcoal was loaded in Taperas, close to San José de Chiquitos, and hauled by box trailer to Santa Cruz. That is the distance from the ovens to the warehouse — not a factory in another country.

02 · SANTA CRUZ

The main deposit

Cartons stacked on pallets in a closed warehouse. This is the stock that leaves Bolivia as whole boxes, the same packing idea as the 5kg IronMatrix carton: protect the log, not a sack of dust.

03 · ARICA

Container to Chile

From this floor the load waits for a container bound for Arica, the Pacific port. Santa Cruz to the sea is the export corridor. Florida is downstream of that box.

ARICA · 23 SEPTEMBER 2016 · AFORO

Customs unloaded 3,500 boxes by hand.

The container was CAPITAL CLHU 845378. Chilean customs (aforo) pulled the cargo in Arica: 3,500 cartons of Real White Charcoal, taken out by hand and charged as an inspection. Class 4.2 on the doors — self-heating charcoal — is why they opened it. The stamp on the photographs is the aforo date: 23-09-2016.
